The November entries were few (12) but several were quite good. It was easy to settle on three winners, at least viewed through my particular prism.
As a longtime page one designer, Sunday editor and now AME/visuals, I focus primarily on the strength of the lead art. But I also believe it's crucial in newspaper design to focus on the words: the headlines, the layering of information, the captions. In a rapidly changing media universe, it's more important than ever to focus on excellent visuals and making sure the words and images work well together. The cleaner the page, the more effective it is.
With that in mind, here are my choices from this group:
